THE STORY:

Henrietta Hotmess is the woman holding the whole place together with coffee, a stained apron, and one remaining nerve.

By day, she runs the Chicken Department.

That means chicks underfoot, feed dumped five minutes after she swept it, somebody climbing something they were specifically told not to climb, and at least one tiny criminal disappearing the second she starts counting heads.

Henrietta cleans. Henrietta counts. Henrietta chases. Henrietta repeats. She is not disorganized. The world around her is simply very committed to entropy. Then eventually, mercifully, the department closes.

Off-duty Henrietta finds the pearls, paints the nails, puts on the cat-eye glasses, pours the wine, and decides the mess can wait until morning. She may still have part of the apron on. She no longer cares.

Henrietta loves her chicks, loves her people, and will absolutely show up when she’s needed. But after hours? Not her problem anymore!
